Nordhoff was a journalist for Harpers from 1857 to 1861, the New York Evening Post for ten years. In 1873 became a Washington correspondent for the New York Herald. Jarvis was employed by the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad company in 1882 in the office of C.E. Perkins. In 1912 he transferred to hold the office of assistant secretary of the C.B. & Q. for 21 years.
